All Cancers Age-Adjusted Mortality Rate Surpasses Diseases of the Heart

چکیده
In 1900, the three leading causes of death in the United States were infectious diseases: Pneumonia/Influenza, Tuberculosis, and Gastritis/Enteritis/Colitis. 1 By the mid-20th century, three chronic diseases (Diseases of the Heart, Malignant Neoplasms and Cerebrovascular Disease) were firmly entrenched as the leading causes of death in the U.S. Late in the 20th century, seven of every ten U.S. resident deaths each year were the result of a chronic disease. At that time, the two most common causes of death, Diseases of the Heart and Malignant Neoplasms (All Cancers) accounted for more than 50% of the total deaths annually in the United States. The number of annual deaths attributed to Diseases of the Heart, and the corresponding mortality rate, were both much higher than the corresponding death count/rate for All Cancers. 2 However, over the past decade, the gap between Diseases of the Heart and All Cancers annual death counts and mortality rates has been closing. Declining Diseases of the Heart deaths and mortality ratesattributed to several factors including: improved access to emergency care for acute events, an enhanced portfolio of medications that reduce risk for heart disease deaths, evolving diagnostic and treatment technologies/strategies, and increased public health interventionshave made monitoring mortality data trends of great public health interest.

HEART RATE: A PREDICTOR OF EARLY MORTALITY IN PATIENTS WITH MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION
A number of epidemiologic studies have reported a positive relationship between heart rate, cardiovascular disease and mortality. To examine the correlation between heart rate and mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI), 2147 patients hospitalized in coronary care units in Isfahan were investigated in a cross-sectional study. Their heart rate was measured according to an electroca...
متن کاملGeographical Distribution of Death due to Cancer in Kerman Province, Southeast Iran
Background: In Iran, cancer kills 30,000 people, annually. The epidemiology of cancer is gradually changing as a result of the demographic and epidemiological transition in Iran. This study aimed at presenting a geographical distribution of cancer mortality in Southeast area of Iran, and comparing proportional mortality and age-adjusted mortality rates. Methods: The present study was a descrip...
متن کاملIn-Hospital Elderly Mortality in a Nigerian Tertiary Health Care Center
Introduction: The elderly represent a significant proportion of the populace and their mortality index is of public health significance. With dearth of vital registration, in-hospital based studies remains a desirable alternative. This study hopes to determine the epidemiologic pattern of elderly mortality with respect to sex, age, date and cause of death. Methods: This is descriptive retrosp...
متن کاملPrognostic Impact of Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction Risk Index on Hospitalization Mortality of Patient with Acute Pulmonary Embolism
Introduction: Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is one of the deadly cardiovascular diseases. One of the indexes proposed in these patients for risk stratification is the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) risk index (TRI), which includes three parameters of systolic blood pressure, age, and heart rate. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of TRI on in-hospit...
متن کاملComparing trends in mortality from cardiovascular disease and cancer in the United Kingdom, 1983–2013: joinpoint regression analysis
BACKGROUND We aimed to study the time trends underlying a change from cardiovascular disease (CVD) to cancer as the most common cause of age-standardized mortality in the UK between 1983 and 2013. METHODS A retrospective trend analysis of the World Health Organization mortality database for mortality from all cancers, all CVDs, and their three most common types, by sex and age. Age-standardiz...
